“Thought you might need these,” Andrew’s chief deputy, Mitch, says, handing over a US Marshals raid jacket, a ballistic vest, a gun belt, and all the accessories. “I assumed you’d have your service-issued sidearm, but even if you didn’t, I brought spares.”

“You assumed correctly. And thanks.”

“Just practicing my mind reading.”

Andrew smiles as he dons all his gear.

“What about your family?” Mitch asks.

“Well, Margery knows this is the job I signed up for. Colin was having a great time fishing and of course wanted to stay and watch. I told him we’d go fishing later this summer and didn’t address exactly what we were doing today.”

His voice trails off as he listens to Jerry talking with one of his deputy marshals by police radio. Jerry comes to Andrew with a situation report.

“My guy says Martin is outside again, looking at the bayou. He can’t see if the cap is still on the tree.”

“Great. Okay now, everyone, gather around.”

The group quiets and turns to face Andrew, Clint, and Jerry.

“I’m passing around an enlarged DMV photo of our subject, Martin Landry. We understand he is outside his lab, so we’re going in hot, given he will see, and hear, us coming. No sirens, though. Let’s at least surprise him when we roll into the driveway. Webster SWAT, you will have your breach ram ready, just in case he beats us into the house, locks us out, and we have to ram the door. State, you are primary, so he is all yours once we serve him the warrant. You can choose to interview him there, or we can take him into town.

“Keep in mind, our search warrant only covers items that may be associated with the murder of Timmy Johnson. However, we will also be searching for anything related to his missing minor child, Oscar. Here, please pass this around,” he says to Clint, who hands out color eight-by-tens of Oscar. “I’m passing around a photo of the missing child, who was reported kidnapped last year. Take a look at it and commit it to memory. We find anything related to the kid, we stop to determine if it’s outside the scope of our warrant. Webster dive team, you guys can launch your airboat from behind his house. You are going to drag the bayou, specifically looking for anything related to the homicide. Questions?”

“Yeah, not a question, more a point of fact. We understand that his place is built out of reinforced concrete, so if our ram doesn’t break his door, we could blow it, but that might damage any evidence. Thoughts or suggestions?” the SWAT commander asks.

Andrew looks at Clint and Jerry. “You guys have been there. Anything to add?”

“The door looks to be steel. Not wood. However,” Clint says, looking over at the heavy-duty-tow-truck-turned-SWAT-vehicle, “it looks like you guys have a winch on that truck. I bet you could pull it off its hinges if needed.”

Jerry looks at a new device attached to the side of the SWAT vehicle. “And if you have to use that battering ram, or whatever it is, it looks like that will not be an issue.
